Staying at the Boab Caravan Park in Katherine and up bright and early ready to hit the golf course.
A real eye opener this course and a must play. Only 9 holes with 18 tees. I spoke with the green keeper who told me they've had bad wet seasons for the last three years, (no rain) now their water allocation has been cut back. Shame, but it was still great and would have looked magnificent before.
I played very sold golf with two under on the back nine (4 birdies helped). The front nine, well, lets just say that was my warm up.
The afternoon was spent on cruise up the Katherine Gorge. That was nice and relaxing, the photos will tell you enough. There are two gorges and a walk of about 600 mts to another boat and gorge.
I finally seen my first crock. He may look huge in the photo but he's only about maybe 1 meter.
We pushed the boat right into a small cave to see some very small species of bats. They were so small I could hardly see them , I could only see one at that, and was right up close sitting in the front of the boat, but my zoom lens captured them fabulously. Wilson and I were a little surprised to see the photo.
12/8/20 Edith
Left early for Edith Falls only 40 K’s up the road and 30 in. Got to the location at 9:30 as I was told they don’t take bookings and first in first served. When I got there the car park was pretty full of vans, so this must be a popular spot. Fantastic little park with constant watering of lawns and your own small back lawn in amongst trees. Great little Kiosk where I had the best coffee for a long time (nice size too).
The attraction of this place is the lovely swimming hole with water fall. Takes your breath away when you first see it, especially after what I have been seeing.
There are signs all around saying be aware of crocks and the dangers etc. But I’m too tough for that so in I goes, ahhhhh so lovely. Next minute something bit me very hard on my leg. It took a bit bark off and a small amount of blood was running down my leg. Whatever it was it didn't come back for more (maybe didn’t like the taste of bourbon). So I did what I knew you would have done, I swam right across the pool and soaked under the water fall, I didn't have the heart to tell all the oldies soaking in the water around me what happened. I talked to someone later and they said it most likely was a turtle, sounds right to me and Wilson.
I forgot how many swims I had at this place, but it was a lot. I left early next morning and did the walking trail up river. There are constant water falls above and I completed the longest trail (around 10 K’s). and had a few swims up there too.
There is a walking trail from Katherine Gorge to Edith Falls that takes five days (65 K’s) but I’ll do that with Kay sometime, I know shell LOVE that..
I spoke to a couple of hikers on the trail and they told me how great it was. They said every camp is beside a lovely pool and waterfall so you can sort of have a spar every night. I walked to their last camp site and it was paradise (well sort of).
Back at camp I was talking to my neighbor Marilyn, who has been travelling on her own for five years. She owns a little pop top with a map of Australia on the back marked with all her travels. Makes my travels look very small. I meant to get a photo of her besides the map but forgot.
I'm now headed into Kakadu National Park tomorrow and God only knows when I'll get to talk to you as no reception. I was lucky here at the Kiosk as there is reasonable coverage here where I'm sitting with a nice coffee and my laptop updating my blog especially for you. I think I may look a bit yuppie, and I have had a few look at me and have a laugh with their partners. (can't blame them) but it's all worth it for my many many wonderful friends out there following my blog..
Hang on, checked my emails and I have 3. Woopie! Thanks Joe, Ann and Bruce, at least I just have 3 followers......sorry, and K.
Regards Doug
